## About this session

This episode of the third edition of NestGen Xpress features Ryan Smith, the founder of Titan Protection, a leading-edge security firm, specializing in crime prevention and detection.

Ryan discusses about some of the key challenges that officials face and how are remote drone operations helping solve them.

Drone-in-a-box deployment of remote drone ops have actively helped improve the response times for crimes prevention. The interview also discusses how drone-in-a-box adoption can be increased throughout the country.

## Transcript

**[0:10]** hello everyone welcome back to neston express season 3 it's finally bright and sunny here in San Diego and we are live from the flight based booth at AI exponential for this episode I'm joined by Ryan Smith founder of Titan protection a leading Ed security firm specializing in crime prevention and detection Ryan it's so great to have you at the show thank you for joining us absolutely how has the event been treating you so far how this show has been great I uh this is actually my first auvsi I've done the commercial UAV show but uh this has been a great show so why don't we kick things off with a quick introduction of yourself and Titan sure Titan I I started the company in in 2008 after several years in law enforcement and really started um with the hope of blending technology and people together for um for security purposes and so we have a side of our business that does security

**[1:11]** officers um and then we also have a um security operations center where we monitor several thousand video cameras across the country and we blend those things together um for what we call remote guarding all right okay so given your experience or expertise in uh you know law enforcement and security what according to you are the major key challenges that you foresee uh you know officials facing and how autonomous drone in a box or autonomous drone systems do you see uh helping in them out sure I think in the security space there's a lot of unused time from security Personnel or are we watching video cameras to you know hope we catch something happening or having the security officer Patrol in hope so being able to use technology like drones to have it Patrol and tell us when there's activity that we need to address and then also using the Personnel side for the response or The Last Mile piece of that is is an important component that we believe in in kind of

**[2:13]** blending those things together um so I think the challenge being how do we use the technology and and how does the technology mature to be able to accomplish that mission got it so Titan also has a 247 Command Center uh kind of for setup I think you call it the security Operation Center corre uh that monitors surveillance cameras across the country so how has that improved uh response time for Crime you know uh prevention and maybe you could share some anecdotes or stories yeah um it it allows us and kind of our tagline to stop only recording crime because traditionally you have a crime that happens you go back and look at the video it tells you basically what you already know somebody broke in stole your stuff so being able to interact in that in real time and have the camera tell us when there's something there um and then react to it it gets a much better response from law enforcement because we're not calling them with a blind alarm system that's gone off or you know we're we're describing something that's happening and so we get many

**[3:17]** arrests through this um you know and I can think of several where we you know we call the police and our message to them is we're looking at somebody and describe it uh you know in real time they have just broken a window they've broken into something so it gets a much better response from the police department um for that reason right I think I I loved what you just said that it's not just about recording right it's also about taking corrective action on it so from your customer development uh deployments that you've done so what kind of security operations do you see adoption happening is it primarily more for um petrols or also like for on demand reaction and alarm based responses particularly autonomous is I would say both uh you know when we do remote guarding a lot of what we're doing is augmenting the security officer that may be sitting at a construction site you know they may Patrol every once in a while what are they doing in between there the camera systems and the sensors have multiple sets of eyes as opposed to one so um

**[4:20]** you know being able to put all those things together um again for that response pie is is um is important but construction sites car dealerships um these types of things things is where we're you know we don't want to replace we still think there's a place for the people in this you know uh ecosystem but we want to focus their attention and become much more efficient with how they're responding and what they're doing um with those things so how much of it does get being used for you know 911 kind of response uh or or is it primarily like more remote sites like you mentioned car dealerships uh which Maybe cover a lot large areas so is it like mix of both or is it primarily more focused on emergency kind of a situation um where it works very well in situations where people aren't supposed to be because the mirror detection of a person tells us something needs to happen we can do an audio intervention we can send the police we can send our security people um but then there's an also an aspect of right now we might Patrol a shopping center where it's

**[5:23]** populated with people that should be there so just the mere presence of somebody so being able to do a patrol and have somebody in our Command Center watching that and doing the patrol virtually is much more efficient it's much more cost effective um and then again we're reply relying more on the the people aspect for the response um so you know I really do think it's both we we can do patrols proactively um and let the system tell us when there's something there we can use other sensors and let that happen and we can also watch the patrol and look you know in that shopping center do we see suspicious activity are there you know somebody around a car or groups of people loitering um type of thing um so I really think it's a combination of all of us so one question regarding that uh drones are just one of the hardware systems that facilitate the security operations you know what kind of other systems do you think need to be in place uh for it to you know function effectively uh are requirements for AI based response or you know mitigation measures so it what are

**[6:29]** your uh sure it takes a lot of difference and I I wouldn't say there's a one-size fits-all we run into some challenges with um you know say we're watching a parking lot where um a customer has their assets whether it be vehicles or a product or or anything of that nature the challenge that can sometime exist is right now we use cameras um we use solar powered camera trailers and different things that can be beneficial but it can also be limiting and if we want to cover an entire property we may need several of those system where the Drone can Patrol and we maybe only need one of those that can cover a large area the other challenge that we run into uh especially in Transportation uh vertical folks may have their trailers and if you've got a fence line and a trailer parked up against it camera over here looking it's obscured from the bad guy that may cut into the fence so the Drone being able to do a patrol is really helpful in that scenario where we can Patrol perimeters and blind spots um instead of needing

**[7:31]** multiple cameras but I will say the layered approach of all of these things working together is usually where we're seeing success yes definitely so uh Ryan finally uh the last question would be looking ahead what are the key challenges as an IND that we need to overcome as an industry to get to more adoption of autonomous drone in a box or remote operations and um you know how do you see the adoption coming up or shaping up in the future there's there's two things Beyond visual an aite and the docking station to charge the Drone we have been following this for for several years waiting for those two things to come together and it's kind of exciting this year to hear you know we've I I'm here specifically for the BB loss um aspect of this and and hearing the FAA start to talk about the proposed rule for part 108 and BB loss they're using language that that proposed rule is coming out this year and so we're seeing these things converge and and it's really exciting for those things to come together so the docks are starting to become a big thing yes and I think it

**[8:32]** that also in response to you know we need the Box because it defeats the autonomy if we have to send a person out to charge but swap the battery it doesn't save us anything so I think now that the manufacturers are seeing that BV loss is becoming a reality we're now seeing a lot more drone docks and docking stations and a lot of options putting that together so those two things are what we need to make this a viable option for us and for our customers and uh it's just exciting to see those things come together it's been many years that you know we've been following this and we it finally feels like we're uh we're getting there yes definitely and especially part 108 it's been almost over I think 2 years now almost two years that it's been in the talks so if it comes into reality this year it's going to be a major step or a major win uh for the states so thanks again for joining in uh today and uh stay tuned for the upcoming sessions and episodes of uh messan Express

**[9:32]** season 3 thank you so much Ryan thank you for your time
